Online safety is an integral part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded in their learning at school. At Greenwood Primary School, we want to help our parents/carers and children improve their own understanding of online safety issues so they can learn to use the internet and all digital media in a safe and secure way.
As a parent/carer you'll know how important the internet is to children - they use it to learn, play, socialise and express themselves. But the technology children use every day can seem a bit daunting and you might worry about the risks your child can face online.
This section of our website aims to provide practical support and information to aid parents/carers in ensuring your child is safe online.
If you have any concerns regarding your child's safety online, please do not hesitate to contact the school and the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Miss A Robinson.
Top Tips
Technology use should be transparent
Encourage the use of technology in a central family area. This will make it easier to keep an eye on your child’s activities. The best protection still remains that of adult supervision.
Talk to your child
Take time to talk to your child(ren) about what sites they enjoy using. Ask them to show you how they use the game, website or app. Talk to them about how to stay safe on this game, website or app.
Online ‘Friends’
Talk to your child(ren) about not accepting ‘friend requests’ from any strangers. Ensure they know to never give away any personal information such as their name, address, personal details etc. Take time to especially discuss with your child the importance of never arranging to actually meet a person they met online.
Be kind!
Whether you are talking online or in person, we know from Jesus’ example that we should always be kind to everyone. Being online should be a place for everyone to enjoy safely and no one should be subject to mean comments. Encourage your child to consider the possible consequences of their online actions. If you wouldn’t say it in person then don’t say it online.
Privacy settings and sharing controls
Social networking sites such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or Snapchat (which most have an age restriction of 13+) have sharing and privacy controls to manage who sees their personal posts, photos, videos, etc. It is good practice to ensure that all profiles are private – that way you can manage who sees your child’s/ children’s content.
Don’t believe what you read!
Not everything that is available online is true. Talk to your child about this and encourage your child to be critical as not everything is what it appears.
You know your child best …
You know your child best! Use your judgement to decide if your child is ready to have access to different social media platforms, games, apps etc.
