Welcome to Nursery

A very warm welcome to Greenwood Primary School Nursery, where we are proud to provide a happy, nurturing and stimulating environment in which every child can thrive.

We understand that starting Nursery is an important milestone for both children and their families. Our aim is to create a ‘home from home’ where children feel safe, valued and excited to come to school each day.

Our Nursery

We offer an AM Nursery session, Monday to Friday, providing three hours of high-quality Early Years provision each morning. Our Nursery has capacity for 25 children.

Our Nursery is led by:

Class Teacher – Mrs Howard
Mrs Howard is passionate about Early Years education and creating an engaging environment where children can develop their confidence, independence, curiosity and love of learning.

Nursery Nurse – Ms D'Souza
Ms D'Souza has over twenty years of experience working in Early Years, with particular expertise in speech and language development, early mathematics and the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Together, our experienced Nursery team works closely with children and families to ensure that every child has a positive and successful start to their journey at Greenwood.

Learning in Nursery

Children learn through a balance of purposeful play, adult-led activities and carefully planned opportunities to explore and discover. We support children to develop their communication and language, early reading, writing and mathematical skills alongside their physical, social and emotional development.

Most importantly, we want our children to be happy, confident and enthusiastic learners who are ready for the next stage of their education.

Supporting Communication, Language and Oracy

At Greenwood, we recognise that communication and language are at the heart of children's learning and development. In Nursery, we provide a language-rich environment where children are encouraged to listen, talk, question, explain and share their ideas throughout the day.

As a Voice 21 school, we place a strong emphasis on oracy and begin developing these important skills from the Early Years. Children are given regular opportunities to develop their confidence in speaking and listening through purposeful conversations, partner talk, stories, rhymes, songs, role play and small-group activities.

Our adults carefully model high-quality language, introduce and reinforce new vocabulary, and encourage children to express their ideas in increasingly clear and confident ways. Through everyday interactions, children learn how to take turns, listen attentively, respond to others, ask questions and contribute to conversations.

Stories, songs and rhymes are an important part of our Nursery provision and help children to develop their vocabulary, understanding, confidence and enjoyment of language.

We recognise that children enter Nursery with different experiences and starting points. Our experienced staff carefully observe children's communication and language development and work closely with families to identify where additional support may be beneficial.

By placing communication, language and oracy at the centre of our Nursery provision, we aim to give every child a strong foundation for learning, relationships and future success
