Behaviour at Greenwood Primary School

At Greenwood Primary School, we believe that positive relationships, respect and understanding are at the heart of effective behaviour management. Our new behaviour policy is rooted in Therapeutic Thinking, which focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviour and supporting children to make positive choices.

We encourage and celebrate valued behaviours that reflect our school vision — Nurture, Grow, Succeed — and our core values of respect, kindness and responsibility. When children demonstrate these behaviours, they are recognised and rewarded in line with our policy, helping to create a positive and supportive school culture where everyone can thrive.

While our aim is to deter detrimental or dangerous behaviours through a therapeutic approach, we understand that challenges can arise. When such behaviours occur, appropriate consequences will be applied in line with our policy. However, we believe it is important to understand why a child is behaving in a certain way.

Through restorative conversations, we work closely with children to reflect on their actions, understand the impact of their behaviour and explore better ways to respond in the future. By rebuilding relationships and supporting emotional growth, we aim to help every child learn from their experiences and feel empowered to make positive choices.

To support both staff and children, Mrs Tatla, Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development, Behaviour and Wellbeing, works closely with Rohan Parekh (Behaviour Mentor) and colleagues across the school. She supports staff in confidently applying Therapeutic Thinking strategies and helps children understand our new behaviour policy and what it means for them. By promoting consistency and clarity, Mrs Tatla ensures that everyone feels supported in creating a safe, nurturing and respectful environment.

At Greenwood, our approach is about support, understanding, and consistency. Together with families, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful and nurturing environment where all children can succeed both academically and emotionally.

Learning Behaviour Mentor:

We are proud to have Rohan Parekh as our Learning Behaviour Mentor. Rohan plays a key role in supporting children’s behaviour, wellbeing and emotional development. Here’s what he says about his work:

As Learning Behaviour Mentor and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL), my role is to support children across the school who may benefit from mentoring around behaviour or who are experiencing low mental health due to other factors in their lives.

Being an advocate for our children, I aim to ensure they feel safe, secure and happy. I also work to equip them with a stronger understanding of emotional literacy, helping them feel confident and comfortable approaching trusted adults to discuss any concerns. This creates a better sense of self-awareness and helps to build self-esteem.

As a Therapeutic Tutor, I constantly embed the therapeutic approach across the school — whether in class or on the playground. Working closely alongside Mrs Tatla (Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development, Behaviour and Wellbeing) and Mr Jones (Assistant Headteacher/SENDCo), we identify children who would benefit from having a Therapeutic Plan. Together, we collate relevant information and strategies to support the child effectively. By working in partnership with parents, we are able to put these plans into action, which often leads to significant improvements in behaviour, engagement, mood, and even attendance.
