Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion at Greenwood Primary School

At Greenwood Primary School, we are committed to creating an environment where every child feels seen, heard and valued. We recognise that developing diversity and inclusion is an on-going journey, and we are working hard to ensure that our school truly reflects and celebrates the rich mix of cultures, backgrounds and experiences within our community.

We want every child to feel that they belong and that their identity is recognised and respected. Through our curriculum, assemblies and enrichment opportunities, we are taking deliberate steps to ensure that children see themselves represented in what they learn, while also gaining an understanding and appreciation of the wider world.

In line with our school vision — Nurture, Grow, Succeed — we are striving to build an inclusive school where equality is promoted, stereotypes are challenged and respect for others is at the heart of everything we do. We encourage open, honest conversations about identity, respect and belonging, helping our children to develop empathy, confidence and a strong sense of community.

As part of this commitment, Greenwood Primary School has proudly adopted the Halo Code — the UK’s first Black Hair Code. We recognise that, for many Black pupils, school dress codes have historically created barriers by forcing them to choose between their education, cultural identity and hair health. By adopting the Halo Code, we explicitly protect students and staff who choose to wear their natural hair and protective hairstyles associated with their racial, ethnic and cultural identities. This proactive step ensures that no member of our school community faces discrimination, judgment or limitations because of their Afro-textured hair.

How can you help?

Our journey towards greater diversity and inclusion involves listening to the voices of our pupils, families and staff. By working in partnership with our school community, we aim to create a safe and welcoming environment where everyone feels accepted and supported. At Greenwood, we are learning and growing together and we are proud to be developing a school where every child has the opportunity to flourish. We value our community’s voice and would love to hear your ideas on how we can continue to celebrate and promote diversity across our school. Please feel free to speak with Mrs Tatla (Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development, Behaviour and Wellbeing), our Race and Diversity Lead Jade Barr, or team members Miss Begum and Mrs Salih.
