PSHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education at Greenwood Primary

At Greenwood Primary School, we believe that education is about nurturing the whole child. Academic success is important, but we also want our pupils to grow into confident, resilient and compassionate individuals who are well prepared for life beyond school.

That’s why PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) sits at the heart of our curriculum. It equips children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to make informed choices, build positive relationships and maintain their mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

We follow the Ealing PSHE Scheme of Work, which provides a clear and progressive framework. Through carefully planned lessons, children explore themes such as:

  • Health and Wellbeing — understanding physical and mental health, safety, and self-care
  • Relationships and Respect — developing empathy, kindness, and positive friendships
  • Rights and Responsibilities — understanding their rights and responsibilities as part of society
  • Aspirations and Citizenship — learning about diversity, financial awareness and preparing for the future

How PSHE Links to Our Whole-School Approach

At Greenwood, PSHE isn’t just taught in the classroom — it’s woven throughout everything we do. It underpins our vision: Nurture, Grow, Succeed and connects directly with our wider work on personal development, behaviour, wellbeing and inclusion.

Behaviour and Therapeutic Thinking

Our behaviour policy is rooted in Therapeutic Thinking, helping children understand their feelings, regulate their emotions and make positive choices. This is a key element of PSHE, where children learn self-awareness, empathy, and problem-solving.

Personal Development and Wellbeing

PSHE directly supports our work on personal development, helping pupils to build resilience, confidence and emotional literacy. Our partnership with Place2Be ensures that children who need additional emotional support have access to professional help, complementing the strategies taught in PSHE lessons.

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

Our OPAL programme enhances children’s social and emotional development by providing opportunities for creativity, teamwork and problem-solving. Outdoor play also promotes physical and mental wellbeing, reinforcing PSHE themes around healthy lifestyles and positive relationships.

Rights Respecting School

As a proud Rights Respecting School, we embed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into our daily practice. This complements our PSHE curriculum by helping children understand their rights and responsibilities, respect diversity and develop a sense of fairness and equality.

Our Commitment

Through PSHE, we prepare our children for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow. By linking together behaviour, wellbeing, inclusion and personal development, we create a supportive, respectful and nurturing environment where every child can flourish — academically, socially and emotionally.
