Greenwood Primary School was filled with imagination, creativity and excitement as pupils and staff came together to celebrate World Book Day. This year’s celebrations were inspired by the beautiful picture book Journey, a story that encourages children to explore the power of imagination, storytelling and adventure.
From the moment the school gates opened, it was clear that something special was happening. Children and staff arrived dressed as a wonderful range of characters from their favourite books and films. The corridors were full of superheroes, magical creatures, famous storybook characters and even a few mysterious adventurers. The colourful costumes brought stories to life and created a joyful atmosphere throughout the entire school.
Across the school, classes explored the themes and illustrations from Journey. The story sparked discussions about imagination, courage and creativity, encouraging children to think about where a story can take them and how books can open doors to new worlds.

Art activities took place in every classroom, with pupils creating their own imaginative responses to the book. Some designed magical worlds, others created red door adventures like the one in Journey, and many produced beautiful artwork inspired by the story’s illustrations. The school was soon filled with colourful displays showing just how creative our young artists can be.
One of the highlights of the day was the creation of a whole school poem. Every class contributed lines describing what it means to be part of Greenwood Primary School. When all the ideas were brought together, they created a wonderful poem celebrating friendship, kindness, learning and belonging.
The poem reminds us that, just like the character in Journey, we are all travelling on an adventure together, supporting one another as we learn, grow and discover new things.
World Book Day is a fantastic reminder of how important reading is for every child. Books help us develop our imagination, learn new ideas and understand the world around us. They allow us to step into other people’s stories and discover places we may never have imagined.
At Greenwood Primary School, we believe that reading is at the heart of learning. Whether it is sharing a story with a friend, exploring a new book in class or diving into an exciting adventure at home, reading opens the door to endless possibilities.
World Book Day was a truly wonderful celebration for our whole school community. The fantastic costumes, inspiring artwork and collaborative poetry showed just how much our pupils love stories and creativity.
Most importantly, the day reminded us all of the joy that reading can bring.
A huge thank you to our staff, pupils and families for helping to make World Book Day at Greenwood Primary School such a memorable and magical day. We can’t wait to see where our next reading adventure will take us!
