Spring 2

A key stage full of busy bees!

This term, KS1 have been buzzing with excitement, as the children have embraced a variety of topics and activities. To kick off the term, they celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite characters from beloved books. Our focus book, The Dot, inspired the children to create stunning artwork and take part in creative writing activities, all centred around this beautiful story.

The excitement continued with Number Day, where the children dressed up in maths-themed outfits and participated in a wide range of fun and engaging mathematical activities, all designed to celebrate the joy of numbers. Science Week was a highlight, packed with fascinating activities. The children had the chance to take part in a captivating workshop that left them in awe. The experiments, demonstrated by our special visitor, amazed everyone and filled the hall with wonder. It's safe to say, this experience has sparked a newfound interest in science, and I look forward to seeing which of our young learners may one day pursue a career as a scientist!

Finally, the Curriculum Quest was a fantastic opportunity for parents and carers to come and witness the incredible learning taking place at Greenwood. We are truly grateful to all those who attended and engaged with the activities. It was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic, as they explored different classrooms and confidently found the answers to a variety of questions.

Year 1

This term, Year 1 have been diving into an exciting exploration of our local area, Northolt. The little explorers have been discovering what makes up a local area, identifying key features such as local shops, schools, and essential services. They’ve used both physical and digital maps to help them understand the layout of the area, even creating maps of their own classrooms! The children have also been learning how to use a compass, gaining valuable skills to navigate the world around them. In addition, they’ve been identifying both physical and human features in Northolt, developing a deeper understanding of their local environment. As part of their learning, they went on a local area walk, exploring directions and discovering more about the world beyond the classroom. With their newfound knowledge, they made the best tour guides Northolt could ask for, enthusiastically sharing their insights and discoveries with everyone!

In Design and Technology, the little chefs had an exciting time diving into the world of healthy eating! They explored a wide variety of fruits, tasting and comparing the flavours of each one, discovering new tastes along the way. With their newfound knowledge, they designed and created their very own fruit kebabs, all while making sure to follow important health and safety rules in the kitchen. The little chefs were absolutely delighted as they carefully prepared, chopped, and skewered their chosen fruits, eagerly putting their creative ideas into practice. The look of joy and pride on their faces when they saw their colourful kebabs come to life was priceless! As they tasted their delicious creations, they couldn’t help but smile, knowing they had made something both healthy and tasty. If anyone is ever in need of a tasty, homemade fruit kebab, you’ll know exactly where to go – the little chefs are ready to serve!

Year 2

In Year 2, the little explorers have had an amazing time learning about the stunning and vibrant country of Kenya! They used maps to locate Kenya and gained a clear understanding of hot and cold countries, as well as the importance of the equator. The children were fascinated as they explored Kenya's unique climate and discovered the incredible wildlife that calls the country home. They even created their own map, showing where these wonderful animals can be found across the land. The little explorers also explored Kenya’s human and physical features, its rich culture, and compared it to the United Kingdom. As a fun way to share their newfound knowledge, the children wrote imaginative postcards, pretending they had visited Kenya and showcasing all they had learnt. If anyone’s planning a trip to Kenya, the little explorers in Year 2 are your go-to experts for the best travel tips and information!

In Art, the little artists have had an exciting time diving into the vibrant world of African art, with a special focus on the beautiful and meaningful African masks. They explored a range of stunning masks, discussing their cultural significance and the fascinating stories and symbols behind them. Inspired by these incredible designs, the little artists got to work, sketching their own African masks, playing with bold patterns and shapes. They then took their creativity even further by sculpting their very own masks out of clay, carefully shaping the features of a face and adding intricate details. To bring their masks to life, the children painted them with bright, striking colours and patterns inspired by traditional African designs. Once their masterpieces were complete, the little artists reflected on their work, sharing what they were proud of and thinking about how they could make their next creations even better. The finished masks are nothing short of priceless – true works of art!

Heron class moved us with their heartfelt assembly on kindness, singing beautifully and showing the power of small acts of care and compassion. Hedgehog class inspired us all with their passionate presentation on saving the world, not only with their powerful message but also their amazing singing that made us all think about our role in protecting the planet. Ducks class amazed us with their assembly on the three significant queens in British history. They were dramatic and engaging, sharing lots of fascinating facts about the lives and legacies of each queen, all while bringing their stories to life with confidence and energy.

Year 1

This term, the children went outside to find natural materials and sorted them carefully to create their own land art, inspired by the works of Andy Goldsworthy. After learning about his unique art created using natural materials, they were inspired to draw different types of lines, from straight to curved, and also learnt how to draw various spirals. They then recreated his spiral land art in a painting, carefully capturing the flowing shapes. Following Goldsworthy’s techniques, the children used their sorted materials to craft their own land art, incorporating a range of lines and spirals to create unique and beautiful pieces. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase their creativity and understanding of the artist’s methods.

The little historians were buzzing with excitement as they explored the lives of famous monarchs and their grand palaces, like Buckingham Palace! They began by sequencing the life of Queen Elizabeth I, learning about her clever rule and the challenges she faced during her reign. The children then took on the role of Queen Victoria, writing their own diary entries as if they were the monarch herself, reflecting on the events of her long reign. They also created a detailed family tree of Queen Elizabeth II, tracing her lineage through the generations of past royals. As they compared the lives of the three queens, each with her own unique way of ruling, the children felt a great sense of pride in all the fascinating history they had uncovered!

The little historians were excited as they explored the lives of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. They learnt about Florence Nightingale by examining a range of sources, including photographs and letters, to understand her role in transforming healthcare. They participated in a hands-on workshop, where they explored the challenges she faced and the changes she brought to nursing. For Mary Seacole, the children created detailed timelines to track her life and achievements, learning how she cared for soldiers during the Crimean War. They also designed informative leaflets, filled with facts, to share her story and highlight her contributions. As they compared the two women, the children gained a deeper understanding of how both made lasting impacts on healthcare in their own unique ways.

The little artists explored Yayoi Kusama’s artwork, moving around the class with a partner, just like they were visiting a gallery, studying the various pictures of her colourful and vibrant pieces. They experimented with different techniques for creating polka dots, using a range of materials and equipment to capture Kusama’s signature style. They recreated one of her pieces using collage, practising the technique of overlapping materials to add depth and texture. The little artists sketched a pumpkin with shading, carefully focusing on light and shadow to bring their drawings to life. They used paint to recreate a painting in the style of Kusama’s pumpkins, combining their sketching skills with vibrant colours to produce stunning artwork.

The children had an amazing day at Tower Bridge, where they wowed the tour guide with their impressive knowledge of the bridge’s history. As they explored, they learnt fascinating facts and even created animations inspired by the "Jumping Bus" story.
